Is it time to put up your Ajax homes for sale and start thinking about
where you would like to spend your retirement years? Those of you who hail from
northern climates often dream about retiring, or at least spending the winter
in, locations that are less likely to freeze our skin off come the sunless days
of January and February. Popular locations include places like Florida and even
Mexico, but the burgeoning retirement markets in these places have served to
ramp up the costs of living. We'd like to suggest the city of Brownsville
as a viable place to retire; here are some of our reasons why.
Climate
Brownsville is one of the southernmost cities in the continental United States.
It enjoys both a low latitude and a low elevation, and that means you can expect
to find warm weather almost all year round. Unlike Toronto beach homes, a retirement
bungalow on the shore in Brownsville will likely not see snow in your lifetime
(or your children's or your grandchildren's, for that matter!).
The climate here is generally on par with that of the major Florida retirement
sites, complete with palm trees and other broadleaf evergreen plants for that
tropical feel.
Hobbies
Brownsville is a very culturally diverse city, and that means that a number
of hobby opportunities abound. Many people enjoy going to the many different
galleries and museums around the city. You can also count on finding a lot of
different and involved activities popular amongst retirees; enroll in faux painting
instruction or Mexican weaving classes and you will acquire a skill few others
enjoy.
Health
A little known fact about Brownsville is that it is home to a regional campus
of the University of Texas Health Science Center. In eight years, over
ten million dollars in public funding alone has gone into this facility, which
means that it can boast some cutting edge knowledge when it comes to the health
issues of the population in general. Most of these time, these issues are ones
which are common to many retirees, such as heart conditions and diabetes.
Medical care is not as affordable as home health care BC (or that in other
parts of Canada) but it is more economical than what you would find in many
of the more popular US retirement Meccas.
Prices
Finally, one of the biggest incentives for those looking for a nice retirement
location to move to Brownsville is the comparative prices of homes. Port Credit
homes, for example, fetch more than twice what a similar home in Brownsville
costs to buy, even with the currency exchange factored in. Forget downsizing;
retiring to Brownsville might mean you can afford an even larger house than
the one you spent your work years in!
Economic depression has meant that Brownsville is not the most ideal place
to live for those looking for work. However, the combination of climate, facilities,
and prices mean it's worth a look for the retiree!
